The news coverage of the work accident in Baldock where an employee fractured their pelvis after falling 2 metres from a work beam highlights the importance of safety equipment. In this case, an investigation from the Health and Safety Executive revealed that the employer failed to provide any safety equipment for the job and employees were instucted to use the zig zags in the uprights of the warehouse racking as a ladder and this was standard practice within the company. Climbing racking is extremely dangerous and managers should have been aware of what safety equipment to provide – in this case a set of library steps or small self supporting scaffold tower should have been provided for use along with appropriate training in its use.
In the DIY environment using the correct equipment is just as important – one of the main considerations is to ensure the correct length of ladder is used – never ever stand on the safety rail of step ladders in order to achieve extra height and don’t attempt to use 2 or more ladders together unless they are designed for this use such as our extension ladders.
